Welcome to the 7th winter harvest. We will have our final harvest on March 15th. We may have opportunities for additional harvests, keep an eye on your email. Our regular season starts on April 19th. You are all welcome whether or not you sign up to continue with our CSA to the opening potluck and pizza party on 4/19 from 2-6 p.m.
We have been busy battling the vermin from birds to mice to squirrels. I keep reminding myself that this is just what the start of the season is like, but it sure is frustrating. We are hopefully putting in better structures to prevent this in the future, but it feels like infrastructure is a full time job. At least we have nice vegetables to eat for now.
I was at the westside share fair yesterday talking to potential CSA members about local vegetables. It was not well attended and seemed like people were not as motivated as in the past. I have one more sharefair on March 15th (at the Redd in Portland). This event is huge and has a very fun vibe even if you are not needing to sign-up for a CSA. If you come and join that day we will give you a $20 discount. If you pay in full that will be $45 off - a whole week of veggies for free. Come visit me and spread the word. We only have 6 full shares left as we head into our main season. Maybe we will have a wait list this year. We have flower and egg shares available as well email me if you want to participate weekly or every other week.
We had an amazing contribution to the food donation project last harvest. Families are very appreciative and staff are still managing to distribute to those in need. The future of the project is a bit unclear but at least for the next few weeks we will push forward. We appreciate your participation in our community.
I am busy seeding for not only the CSA but for the Beaverton Farmers Market. Polly and I head back to market for the 24th year with seedlings and fresh cut flowers on April 4th. We will have all the early spring vegetables from peas and spinach to lettuce and early tomatoes. Come see us from 8:30-1:30 weekly through October.
I am not commenting on politics, our insane criminal president or the Oregon legislative session. I am going to concentrate on getting you recipes to enjoy your veggies and getting out to try and get plastic on one of our two uncovered hoops. Wishing you all a great week- text for eggs or take your chances. I also could do flowers if you are interested.
Here are some ideas for recipes this week:
Lyn’s Leek, Green onion and Water cress soup
Leeks
Green onions
Onions or shallots
Watercress
Butter
Olive oil
Potatoes
Chicken or veggie broth
Salt and pepper
I took leeks, sliced the white parts, composted the green parts and sliced all the green onions. I also added a sliced stray onion. I sauteed them in 1 tablespoon butter and some olive oil until they were tender. I then added 4 - 6 cups of chicken broth, 1 or more peeled potatoes (I found one in the hoop house that had grown during the winter) and salt and pepper to taste. I cooked this until the potato was done. Remove the thick stems of watercress and use the tender leaves. Toss them into the soup for 3-5 minutes. Then blend all the ingredients in your Vitamix (okay, you can use a blender, but honestly the Vitamix is miraculous) until smooth. Serve with dried dill or additional cracked pepper.
The best collard recipe from Christine Smith (this recipe made me love collards!!)
